What is Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT)?
Perineural injection therapy (PIT) or Lyftogt Technique, is a proven safe and effective treatment for patients with a variety of injuries. Perineural injection therapy targets inflamed or injured nerves which may lead to symptoms of tendinopathy, ligament and/or joint pain. PIT treats acute, overuse and/ or chronic injuries. PIT is an option for patients who may not be candidates for biologic treatments (such as PRP or stem cell), or surgery. However, perineural injection therapy may also be used in addition to these treatments, or to reduce post-surgical pain.
How does Perineural Injection Therapy work?
Perineural injection therapy works by decreasing neurogenic inflammation. There are many ways in which a nerve will become “inflamed”. This can come from direct compression as it travels through various natural bony, muscular or fascial tunnels or from scar tissue following injury or surgery. Nerves which are trapped send a signal to the brain, which we feel as pain. The injectate helps to stabilize the nerve, enabling it to return to its initial function of nurturing the local tissues.
How many treatments are needed?
Most patients require 4-6 treatment sessions. These sessions are spaced out between 1-4 weeks apart depending on the treatment area. Although the relief after the first session may only last a few hours, with subsequent treatments improvement in symptom intensity and frequency is expected. This treatment has a success rate of 85%.
What are the risks?
These injections are completed with short and thin needles. The injectate solution is comprised of buffered dextrose (simple sugar made from corn). Allergic reaction may occur in those who are allergic to corn. In addition, whenever the skin is infiltrated there is always a risk of bruising and infection. Although localized small bruising is found on occasion, infection has not occurred in our patient population.
What to do before/after PIT?
There is essentially no preparation necessary prior to PIT. There are no medication restrictions, or activity modifications necessary with treatment.
What to expect the day of your treatment?
Depending on the areas being treated, PIT can take as little as 5 mins or up to 30 minutes.
